Arson Suspected in School Fire Disaster
Dlamini visited a local school after a fire broke out in its administration block on February 8, destroying critical resources, including furniture, computers, surveillance cameras, and food supplies for pupils.
nnnnSpeaking to the media, Dlamini assured that the education department would implement interim measures to ensure operations continue.
nnnn“As an immediate solution, we will secure a mobile office to prevent disruptions to administrative activities,” Dlamini said. “We are also providing mobile offices with toilets for teachers.”
nnnnDlamini attributed the fire to arson after assessing the damage.
nnnn“I initially suspected an electrical fault, but after inspecting the building, I saw clear signs of forced entry. The back glass near the deputy principal’s office was cut, and the fire originated there,” Dlamini explained.
nnnn“They likely stole items from the admin block before setting the fire. Unfortunately, almost everything was destroyed—food for learners, stationery, printers, and photocopiers that teachers rely on to assist students.”
nnnnDlamini expressed frustration over the setback, emphasizing the department’s ongoing struggle with infrastructure shortages.
nnnn“This incident is a major setback for us as a department and as a province. We already have a backlog of infrastructure projects, and many of our schools are overcrowded due to urban migration,” Dlamini said.
nnnnHe condemned the alleged arson, stressing the impact on the community.
nnnn“If this was deliberate, it is unacceptable. The perpetrators are not just destroying school property; they are damaging a facility meant to uplift the community and educate our children,” Dlamini stated.
nnnnAuthorities are investigating the incident, and the department is working on long-term solutions to restore the school.
