Cathy Dlamini Bids Farewell After Cabinet Exit

Mpumalanga’s former Education MEC Cathy Dlamini has spoken publicly for the first time since her removal from Premier Mandla Ndlovu’s cabinet, calling her time in office “a privilege, not a right,” and thanking the people she served.

Dlamini’s dismissal was part of a broader cabinet reshuffle announced on 15 July 2025, in which Premier Ndlovu restructured four departments to, in his words, “strengthen governance and improve service delivery.” Among the most notable changes was the removal of Dlamini and Economic Development MEC Makhosazana Masilela.

In a heartfelt statement released shortly after the announcement, Dlamini defended her record and expressed pride in her achievements.
“Supported by incredible and dedicated staff, we delivered the province’s record-breaking matric pass rate and improvement across the board,” she said.
“We fought corruption and capture at every corner. We saved the department millions. And we sought innovative solutions to deliver quality education in both rural and urban areas.”

She emphasized that her short tenure had laid critical foundations for long-term transformation in the education sector:
“During this short stint, we embarked on a task to transform the biggest department in the province. And I’m happy the building blocks were put in place.”

While Ndlovu reiterated that the reshuffle was in the interest of better governance and public trust, Dlamini used her farewell to extend gratitude to a wide range of education stakeholders, including teachers, principals, school governing bodies, unions, parents, and even school security staff, cooks, and cleaners.

“To the students of Mpumalanga — I love every single one of you. And I have nothing but faith that you will continue to shine bright and make us proud,” she added warmly.

Dlamini also welcomed her successor, Lindi Masina, offering words of encouragement and unity:
“As the ANC, we have many capable members. And I believe the incoming MEC of education will keep the fire burning and take this province to the next level. Welcome her and support her work. Congratulations, sesi.”

She concluded by thanking God and all those who supported her through prayer during her time in office:
“May the good Lord abundantly bless them.”
