Dagga Worth R2.1 Million Seized in Mpumalanga

Two separate consignments of dagga, with a combined estimated street value of R2.1 million, were seized in Mpumalanga on April 30 in two unrelated incidents involving Toyota Hilux vehicles.

The first incident occurred in Chrissiesmeer at approximately 03:45, when police noticed a suspicious Toyota Hilux with Gauteng registration plates traveling along the R33. According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the driver ignored instructions to stop, prompting a high-speed chase.

When the vehicle was eventually pulled over, police discovered 64 small packets and 24 larger packets of dagga in the back of the bakkie, weighing a total of 381kg and valued at around R800,000. The 33-year-old driver, a man from eSwatini, was arrested and charged with dealing in dagga.

Later that morning, at about 09:30, another tip-off led police to intercept a second Toyota Hilux—this time with Mpumalanga plates—on the R40 between White River and Hazyview. Upon searching the vehicle, officers found 16 large bags of dagga weighing approximately 320kg and valued at R1.3 million.

Both the driver and a passenger in the second vehicle were arrested on the spot.

The dagga from both incidents was confiscated as part of ongoing investigations. Brigadier Mdhluli confirmed that police remain committed to clamping down on drug trafficking in the province and thanked the public for providing valuable information.
