Ten Buscor Buses Destroyed in Fire

Ten Buscor buses were destroyed in a fire that broke out at an overnight storage area in Barberton, next to the Provincial Hospital, during the early hours of Wednesday.

According to information received, the buses were parked at the Buscor depot when the fire occurred. Buscor has since confirmed that replacement buses have already been arranged and despatched to Barberton to ensure that commuter services continue with minimal disruption.

The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport in Mpumalanga, Mr Thulasizwe Thomo, said he noted the incident with concern but was relieved that no injuries or loss of life were reported.

“The safety of workers, commuters and surrounding communities in Barberton and neighbouring areas remains our foremost priority,” said MEC Thomo.

He has engaged Buscor management to establish the full extent of the damage and to receive assurances on contingency measures put in place, particularly as many commuters rely on Buscor services during the festive season.

The Department is awaiting a full report from Buscor, including preliminary findings into the cause of the fire, while relevant authorities continue with their investigations. MEC Thomo emphasised the importance of strict adherence to safety, fire prevention and risk management measures at public transport facilities.

“As we move through this peak festive season, it is critical that all public transport operators heighten safety standards, ensure regular inspections and have clear emergency response plans in place,” he said. Commuters in and around Barberton have been urged to remain calm, with assurances that the Department will continue working closely with Buscor to maintain service continuity and public safety. MEC Thomo is expected to visit the scene, and further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.
