Hawks Seize Mandrax and Dagga Worth R900 000 at Oshoek Border

Members of the Hawks in Mpumalanga have intercepted a major drug consignment worth an estimated R900 000 at the Oshoek Port of Entry.

The operation was carried out by the Secunda-based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, working in collaboration with SAPS officials stationed at the border. The interception took place on Wednesday, 12 November 2025, when a South African-registered truck entering the country from the Kingdom of Eswatini was stopped for inspection.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered mandrax tablets and dagga hidden inside several suspicious boxes and plastic bags.

The two occupants of the truck — a 33-year-old driver and his 40-year-old crew member, both South African citizens originally from Lesotho — were immediately arrested. In addition to the drugs, police also seized R3 200 in cash and 4 600 Eswatini Emalangeni found in their possession.

The suspects are expected to make their first appearance before the Elukwatini District Court today, 13 November 2025.

Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Gerber, commended the joint effort between law enforcement units, saying the operation reflects the province’s readiness for intensified Festive Season operations.

“We are already processing the exhibits for forensic investigation. The Hawks in Mpumalanga will continue to work closely with other units to ensure the speedy processing of priority crime dockets,” said Major General Gerber.

The Hawks have reaffirmed their commitment to curbing the trafficking of drugs and other serious organised crimes in the province.
