KNP Access Improves After Severe Weather

Some roads and tourism facilities in the Kruger National Park (KNP) have reopened following severe weather, but several restrictions remain in place as recovery and repair work continues.

In an update issued on Friday, 30 January 2026, SANParks said conditions have improved and key assessments have been completed, allowing limited access to resume in some areas. However, closures and travel limits remain in place for safety reasons.

Phalaborwa Gate will open to day visitors from Saturday, 31 January 2026, but travellers entering through this gate may only proceed as far as Satara Rest Camp. Pafuri Gate is open, although the Pafuri Border Post remains closed.

In the northern region, Letaba and Olifants Rest Camps remain closed. Mopani Rest Camp is open, but SANParks said it can only be accessed via Punda Maria Gate, not Phalaborwa Gate. Visitors are advised to bring their own supplies as the restaurant at Mopani is closed.

At Shingwedzi, only the shop and restaurant are open, while the rest camp remains closed until further notice. Bateleur is currently the only bush camp open in the north. Sirheni, Shimuwini and Tsendze remain closed.

South of the park, the Sabie River and Sand River bridges are now accessible, improving travel routes between major camps. SANParks also confirmed that Tshokwane and Nkhuhlu picnic sites are open, but with limited menu options. Boulders Bush Camp is closed, and Orpen Gate remains closed until further notice
