Kubayi launches National Wills Week in Bushbuckridge

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has launched National Wills Week in Bushbuckridge, urging South Africans to take steps to protect their families and assets after their death.

The initiative, held in partnership with the Law Society of South Africa and other stakeholders, provides members of the public with free assistance in drafting basic wills from 14 to 18 September 2026.

Kubayi said having a valid will can help prevent family disputes and uncertainty over the distribution of assets when a loved one dies. She also highlighted the importance of taking the conversation about wills into rural and traditional communities, where discussing death and inheritance can sometimes be considered taboo.

The campaign is aimed at ensuring that ordinary South Africans, including those who do not consider themselves wealthy, understand the importance of estate planning.

Legal practitioners participating in National Wills Week are offering free assistance to help people prepare valid wills and understand their rights and responsibilities.

Members of the public are encouraged to make use of the free service and ensure that their wishes are clearly recorded.
