Mpumalanga Battles Rising HIV and Malaria Cases
Mpumalanga continues to rank among the provinces with high HIV and AIDS infections, despite ongoing efforts to curb the epidemic. Government health facilities offer a range of free integrated services, including on-site HIV testing, TB and STI screening, cervical cancer screening, and assessments for non-communicable diseases.
nnnnGlobally, an estimated 31.6 million people are currently receiving treatment, with 1.3 million new infections reported — a sign of steady progress. However, South Africa recorded approximately 8.1 million new HIV infections in 2024, highlighting the urgent need for stronger prevention initiatives and sustained community education.
nnnnMeanwhile, four Mpumalanga municipalities — the City of Mbombela, Nkomazi, Bushbuckridge and Thaba Chweu — have reported a surge in malaria cases. More than 619 infections and at least five deaths were recorded between April and November this year.
nnnnAs part of SADC Malaria Day activities, the Department of Health visited Matsulu to raise awareness, particularly ahead of the festive season when travel to high-risk areas increases. Officials urged travellers to obtain prophylaxis treatment before visiting malaria-endemic regions and to complete the full course as prescribed.
nnnnHealth experts further stressed the importance of recognising malaria symptoms early. These include fever, headaches, muscle pain, extreme tiredness, nausea and diarrhoea. If untreated, malaria can quickly progress to severe illness, leading to loss of consciousness and organ failure, requiring urgent hospital care.
nnnnAuthorities continue to call for vigilance, early testing and consistent treatment to reduce infections and protect communities across the province.
