PIRATES CLAIM SOWETO DERBY BRAGGING RIGHTS

Orlando Pirates claimed a memorable 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026, in a fiercely contested encounter watched by French football legend and former Arsenal FC superstar Thierry Henry.

The highly anticipated Betway Premiership clash attracted massive attention as thousands of passionate supporters filled the stadium to witness one of South Africa's biggest football rivalries. The match also formed part of the Premier Soccer League's 30-year celebrations.

Henry's presence added international glamour to the occasion, with the former Arsenal and Barcelona striker receiving a warm reception from South African football fans. The 1998 FIFA World Cup winner attended the derby as a global football ambassador for Betway, experiencing first-hand the electric atmosphere that makes the fixture one of the continent's most celebrated sporting events.

On the pitch, Orlando Pirates emerged victorious with a 2-1 win, strengthening their recent dominance over their Soweto rivals. The Buccaneers opened the scoring through Yanela Mbuthuma before Kaizer Chiefs fought back to level matters through Pule Mmodi.

Pirates, however, regained the lead in the second half when Tshepang Moremi found the net, securing all three points for the Buccaneers and giving their supporters another reason to celebrate.

Despite Chiefs' efforts to turn the match around, Pirates maintained their advantage until the final whistle, leaving the Amakhosi supporters disappointed after a derby filled with intensity, emotion and high expectations.

Beyond the result, the occasion once again demonstrated the cultural significance of the Soweto Derby, where football extends beyond the pitch to unite communities, inspire passionate debates and bring generations of supporters together.

Henry's attendance further highlighted the growing international appeal of South African football, with the global icon witnessing the passion, colour and energy that define the rivalry between the two Soweto giants.

For Orlando Pirates, the victory was another important statement in their campaign, while Kaizer Chiefs were left to reflect on a disappointing result against their fiercest rivals.
