POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO THREE LIFE TERMS FOR KILLING WIFE AND TWO FAMILY MEMBERS

Police officer Sizwe Cedrick Khoza has been sentenced to three life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her two siblings in Hazyview.
Khoza who was stationed at Masoyi Police Station, was sentenced by the Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela after pleading guilty to three counts of murder.
The court heard that Khoza and his wife, Nomthandazo Suzan Mnisi, had been experiencing marital problems. A family meeting was arranged to help resolve their differences, with members of her family attending to mediate.
During the meeting, an argument reportedly broke out after Mnisi’s brother, Dennis Mkhatshwa, referred to Khoza as a “small boy”. The remark angered Khoza, who allegedly went to his bedroom, retrieved his service firearm and returned to the room.
He then fatally shot his wife, her sister, Colisile Mnisi, and their brother, Dennis Mkhatshwa. All three victims died at the scene.
In handing down the sentence, the court emphasised the seriousness of the murders and the need to send a strong message against gender-based violence and the killing of women.
Khoza was sentenced to life imprisonment for each murder. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence, expressing hope that it would serve as a deterrent to others who commit similar crimes.
The case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of resolving family disputes without resorting to violence.
