A preservation order has been granted by the Nelspruit High Court for a Toyota Hilux bakkie seized during a major arms bust in Mpumalanga. The order ensures the vehicle remains secured while investigations and legal proceedings relating to potential asset forfeiture continue.

Hawks spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Warrant Officer Thandi Tshabalala, confirmed that the vehicle is valued at R320,000. The preservation order was issued on Monday.

“On 7 November 2024, members of the SAPS Flying Squad were conducting routine patrols along the R537 between White River and Sabie. The officers spotted a Toyota bakkie driving at high speed and failing to stop at a stop sign. When they attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver sped off,” said Tshabalala.

A high-speed chase ensued, and the vehicle was intercepted. Upon searching the bakkie, police found a pistol and an emergency light.

A further search revealed an alarming cache of illegal weapons: 11 rifles, two hand grenades, several handguns, and various calibres of live ammunition.

The driver was arrested on the spot, and the Toyota Hilux, along with the discovered weapons, was seized.

“The matter was referred to the Hawks' Priority Crime Specialised Investigation Unit for further handling,” Tshabalala said.

Following additional investigations, an application for a preservation order was submitted and successfully granted by the court.

According to sources close to the investigation, the firearms included eight AK-47 assault rifles, an R1 rifle, an R4 rifle, and an R5 rifle—highlighting the potential threat posed by the cache.

The Hawks are continuing their investigation to determine the origin and intended use of the weapons. The arrested suspect is expected to face multiple charges relating to the illegal possession and transportation of firearms and explosives.

Authorities commended the swift response of the SAPS Flying Squad and affirmed their commitment to tackling organised crime and protecting communities from illicit arms trafficking.
