Rapist Receives Seven Life Sentences In Limpopo
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has welcomed the heavy sentence imposed on a 27-year-old man, Vongani Sobala Shikwambana, who was convicted of multiple counts of rape and robbery. The Nkowankowa Regional Court handed down the sentence on Monday, 27 October 2025.
nnnnShikwambana received seven life imprisonment terms for seven counts of rape and an additional 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. The crimes date back to 26 February 2017, when the accused attacked three young girls, aged 9, 11, and 13, at Bonn Village under the Letsitele policing area.
nnnnArmed with a panga and accompanied by a dog, he forced the children into nearby bushes where he raped them. Two of the victims managed to escape, but the youngest was subjected to further assault before the attacker robbed her of two cellphones.
nnnnA joint effort by community members and police led to his swift arrest. The case was thoroughly investigated by Detective Sergeant Phumudzo Mabongo of the Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. His meticulous work ensured that the evidence presented in court was strong and comprehensive, resulting in a conviction on all charges.
nnnnThe Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, praised the investigating officer and the prosecution team for their dedication in securing justice for the young victims.
nnnn“This sentence sends a strong message that crimes against women and children will never be tolerated. We applaud the outstanding work by the investigating officer and the criminal justice system for ensuring that such a heartless perpetrator is permanently removed from society,” said Major General Scheepers.
