South Africa has made significant progress in expanding education access, but Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube stresses the urgent need to improve its quality. The goal is to equip learners with skills that prepare them for higher education or employment.

Speaking at the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results announcement on January 13, the Minister highlighted gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy skills, which hinder success in critical subjects like Mathematics and Physical Sciences. These deficits also reduce learners' opportunities for further education and employment.
