South Africa Retains ICAO Council Seat
South Africa has been re-elected to Part Two of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Governing Council during the organisation’s assembly in Montréal, Canada, on Saturday. This category grants member states greater representation at global aviation forums.
nnnnThe assembly is focusing on ICAO’s strategic priorities: safe and secure flights, environmental sustainability, and efficient, accessible air transport.
nnnnMinister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Barbara Creecy, led South Africa’s delegation, which included technical and legal experts from the South African Civil Aviation Authority, Airports Company South Africa, and Air Traffic and Navigation Services.
nnnnCreecy praised the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the African Union’s specialised aviation agency for ensuring that Africa’s priorities are central to the global aviation agenda.
nnnn“The re-election result reaffirms the mandate that South Africa has held since 2003 and demonstrates the confidence of member states in the Republic’s ongoing contribution to shaping the global aviation agenda,” she said.
nnnnShe added that the decision also highlighted South Africa’s role in promoting safety, security, sustainability, and environmental matters while ensuring Africa’s voice remains prominent.
nnnnEgypt and Nigeria were also elected to Part Two of the ICAO Council.
