Strawberry Moon to Dazzle South Africa
South Africa – June 10, 2025 – Stargazers are in for a once-in-a-generation celestial treat this week as the full Strawberry Moon will appear at its lowest point in the sky in 19 years.
nnnnWhile the official full moon occurs at 09:43 on June 11, South Africans are advised to look up shortly after sunset on June 10 for the best view of this rare lunar spectacle. According to Project Nightfall, this remarkable alignment won’t happen again until 2043.
nnnnWhy It's Special
nnnnKnown as the Strawberry Moon, June’s full moon gets its name from the Algonquian tribes of North America, who marked this time of year with the short strawberry harvest season. Despite the fruity name, the moon won’t turn red—but due to its low position in the sky, it may take on a golden or orange hue, thanks to atmospheric light scattering.
nnnnThe moon’s unusually low arc across the sky means it will appear larger and more dramatic near the south-eastern horizon, creating a visual spectacle not to be missed.
